Chainletter - Insects
Following three hard-hitting singles on the Maison Fauna imprint, Chainletter returns with the narrative and emotive EP, “Insects.” Beginning with ambient yet eerie tone-setter “Exclusion III,” Chainletter’s inspirations for “Insects” — dark spaces, unexpected intrusions, and otherworldly sounds — come to sonic form. “Colony” picks up the pace, but slowly, as high-pitched percussive elements weave in and out of the mix. “Deer Tick” puts us in full techno mode. A heavy, 4 x 4 kick reminiscent of a more industrial style grounds the listener through the unexpected, dark, almost screaming samples dispersed throughout the track. While “Fruit Fly” begins a descent into calmer territory, we see more melodic elements introduced here than in prior tracks on the EP. And finally, “Camel Cricket,” with its shuffled hi-hats, multitude of samples, and resonant instrumentals, brings the EP to a satisfying close.
